Kajuru attack: PDP chieftain lambasts federal, state govts for not sympathising with victims’ families

Dr. Amos Abraham, former Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kachia Local Government has berated the federal government and the Kaduna State Government for not sympathising with 32 bereaved families of bandits’ attack victims in Kajuru Local Government.

Suspected gunmen had attacked three villages in the Kajuru Local Government Area of the state and killed over 30 residents.

While the residents said the terrorists were assisted by their colleagues using a helicopter, the state government claimed the helicopter was used by the Nigeria Airforce to save the lives of the residents

However, Dr. Abraham who said he lost one of his nephews in the attack insisted that what happened in Kajuru can also happen to anyone, state or local government, as such, sympathising with the bereaved, can also heal the wounded.

” For close to two weeks since the attack in Kajuru, the federal government cannot even send a delegation to sympathise with the government, as such, the government did not also find it necessary, to send delegations to the bereaved families or meet with the traditional ruler in the area. Except for a denial statement issued through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan.”

Abraham said since the attack, the survivors have been passing through hell, as there was nothing for them to eat or drink in their various IDPs, yet the government kept mute despite their cries for assistance.

He asked, if this government’s ” I don’t care” attitude continues, how would the people have the confidence to vote in the 2023 general elections.

Gunmen abduct ex- Adamawa commissioner, demand N30m ransom

Gunmen have abducted a former Commissioner in Adamawa State and demanded N30 million ransom from his family.

Babangida Abubakar Idris, a Commissioner for Housing and Urban Planning during the immediate past government (of Governor Jibrilla Bindow), was kidnapped in the early hours of Tuesday.

OYO FRONTIER gathered from sources close to the family on Wednesday, that the kidnappers who kept the family in the dark for long hours finally made their ransom demand of N30 million.

The sources said the kidnappers had on Tuesday surrounded the home of the victim at Bajabure, a hilly community in the Girei local government area near the state capital, Yola.

The kidnappers shot the former Commissioner in the foot and wounded some others around the household before making away with him.

“What is now worrisome is that there was also an attack during the last APC primaries when the victim escaped an attack by yet-to-be-identified persons who ended up smashing the victim’s windscreen,” said a family member.

Confirming the kidnapping of Babangida Idris, the state Police Command spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje said the police had taken measures to tackle the issue.

He expressed optimism that operatives of the command would get at the suspects and release the former Commissioner unconditionally.

BREAKING: Days After Ondo Killing, Gunmen Attack Another Church In Southwest

Barely a week and two days after Owo massacre, gunmen have attacked attacked the Celestial Church of Christ, Oshofa Parish at Wasimi, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State on Tuesday.

The gunmen were said to have kidnapped the Assistant Shepherd of the parish, Oluwaseun Ajose and a Sunday school teacher identified as Dagunro Ayobami.

The two worshippers were dragged away by their abductors around 12 am on Tuesday.

The Shepherd of the church, Oluwatomisin Ehuwaojomo, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation.

According to Ehuwaojomo, the abductors called him and demanded a ransom of N50 million for the release of the two church workers.

The Shepherd, while saying the incident was extremely unexpected, sought the support of the police and other security agencies in rescuing the victims.

He said he was not in the church when the incident happened, adding that he was sleeping in his room at the time.

“When my Assistant Shepherd called me almost two hours after they left, the kidnappers refused to speak with me twice. But on his third attempt, they spoke with me and demanded N50 million ransom.

“I told them that, I am a servant of God, nobody pays me a salary. I have spoken with the Ogun State Commissioner of Police. The command is on the matter.”

Contacted, the Ogun State Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was yet to be briefed about the incident, promising to revert.

Oyeyemi had on several occasions warned religious organisations against organising night programmes.

Where such night services become extremely expedient, Oyeyemi advised that requests for police protection be sought by the organisers.

This, he said, would stop the abduction of worshippers during vigils.

Owo Massacre: Southwest Governors Declares 3-Day Mourning

Southwest Governors Forum held an emergency meeting in honour of those who lost their lives at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owo where scores of worshippers were killed in Ondo State on June 5, 2022.

The governors condemned the unprovoked attacks on innocent church members.

Gunmen had stormed the church on June 5, killing over 40 people while injuring several others. The attack has since been condemned by most Nigerians, including President Muhammadu Buhari and other state governors who asked security operatives to unmask the killers.

In a statement obtained by Channels Television on Sunday, the regional governors declared a three-day mourning.

They also condemned in strong terms what they described as a terrorist attack, vowing to protect the people under their domain.

The recent attack, they said, “compels immediate intervention in the whole of the South West to nip the insidious phenomenon of insurgency in the bud.”

“The Governors condemn, in very strong terms, the horrendous crime perpetrated by Terrorist against the people and residents of Owo, Ondo State, and, by extension, the peace-loving people of the South West. The Governors sympathise with the victims of the mindless attack in Owo,” the statement partly read.

“The Governors agreed to declare a 3-day mourning period in memory of the victims of the 5th June, 2022 terror attack on St Francis Catholic, Owaluwa Street, Owo, Ondo State, starting from Monday, 13th June, to Wednesday, 15th, June, 2022 to symbolise our collective loss across all South Western States in Nigeria.

“The meeting agreed that all the Governors should direct the flying of Flags at Half Mast in all public buildings, facilitates and official residences across all the States in the South West in honour of the victims of the Owo terror attack.

“The Governors noted, with great discomfiture, the increasing agitations about spaces taken over by unidentified and unknown migrants in all South West States. The meeting, therefore, recommends an increase in the scope of surveillance of the activities of these undocumented settlers by relevant security agencies in all the States.

“The Governors, as Chief Security Officers, resolved to continue to assist the security agencies in the areas of crisis management and intelligence gathering at ALL times.

“The Governors reviewed reports from various States on the factors militating against peace and security in the region. They expressed grave concern on the influx of Okada riders into all parts of the South West, especially the State capitals. The meeting further resolved that efforts be geared toward identity management of Okada riders and stringent regulation put in place for their operation.

“Consequently, the Forum decided it was time to reconvene the South West Security Committee to look critically into this creeping menace before it blossoms into another intractable social problem. The Committee will be expected to submit its findings on the desirability of Okada operations in the region. It is also expected to submit a multi-level template to combat the threat of insurgency and terrorism in the region.

“The Forum agreed to convene forthwith a physical meeting of the South West Governors to deliberate on the security challenges confronting the region.”

Sanwo-Olu Has Abandoned Governance For Tinubu's Campaign, Says SAN

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has accused the Governor of Lagos State of abandoning governance after the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

He said this in a statement on Saturday titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu and governance in recess’.

Tinubu won the APC’s presidential ticket after polling 1,271 votes to defeat his closest rivals, ex-minister Rotimi Amaechi and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Adegboruwa, who was one of the members of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS-Related Abuses, warned the governor on spending the state’s resources on Tinubu’s campaign.

“Since the declaration of the presidential aspiration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwoolu has abandoned governance in Lagos State.
“He is the unofficial campaign manager of Tinubu, his media strategist and personal anchorman. The Governor has hardly been in office.

“It was the Governor that declared the ban on motorbikes but he is not on the ground to monitor the daily crisis occasioned by the declaration, though commendable but needs careful enforcement.

“The rainy season in Lagos is always a bitter experience for Lagosians in flooding, heavy traffic and other casualties, but the Governor has not been on his seat to address issues related to this. Crime has been on the increase in Lagos lately.

“No doubt state resources will be involved in these campaign activities and most government officials will cash in on the absence of the Governor to also abandon their responsibilities, either to pursue their political other business interests.

“There are many more grave consequences attendant upon the decision of the Governor to abdicate his constitutional responsibilities in pursuit of the political ambition of the APC presidential flag bearer.

“From all the foregoing, I do hereby appeal to Governor Sanwoolu to return to Lagos and assume his constitutional responsibilities of functional governance. His Excellency was not elected as Campaign Manager of politicians but as an administration."

APC may soon be engulfed in crisis – Lukman warns

A member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the National Vice Chairman, North-West, Dr. Salihu Lukman, has warned that the ruling party may soon slip into crisis.
Lukman disclosed this in a leaked letter dated May 27th titled, “Rebuilding APC: Need for New Initiatives” addressed to Adamu and also copied President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Hon, Femi Gbaiabiamila, Chief Bisi Akande, former APC Interim National Chairman; former APC National Chairmen, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Adams Oshiomhole; Bola Tinubu and Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

Lukman in the letter appealed to Adamu to review the party’s approaches under his leadership.

The letter was an indication that there is a crack in the NWC of the party just two months after assuming office.

The party chieftain warned that APC was gradually snowballing into similar circumstances that consumed the Adams Oshiomhole-led leadership whereby decisions taken are allowed to lay bare without implementation.

He said after two months in office Adamu has raised a lot of expectations given that some of the problems, which undermined the support base of previous leadership, would appear to have been minimised.

He said: “The big challenge is ensuring that decisions taken are faithfully implemented. The inability of previous leadership under His Excellency, Adams Oshiomhole and His Excellency. Mai Mala Buni implemented decisions taken partly responsible for the leadership crisis that confronted the party.

“Under your leadership, the current NWC is gradually snowballing into similar circumstances whereby decisions taken are allowed to lay bare and, in some instances, changed without necessarily taking needed steps to carry members along.”

Lukman pointed out that given all the challenges inherited and coming at a time when it was extremely difficult to control events, there was the need for the party leadership to take every measure to avoid past pitfalls.

He further lamented that the Adamu-led NWC was handling very critical responsibilities of managing affairs of the party very casually.

Lukman said: “The case of appointing Screening, primary and Convention Committees is a good example. Again, although with your prompting, a committee was set up under the leadership of Deputy National Chairman (North), Sen. Abubakar Kyari with the task of managing all the process, eventually the committee was unable to discharge this function.

“Partly because of that, for instance, although the National Convention elect the party’s Presidential Candidate is scheduled for May 29 and 30, less than 48 hours, we are yet to have a Convention Committee in place.

“In fact, the Presidential aspirants are yet to be screened. The official explanation is that you are awaiting final consultation with President Buhari. At the risk of sounding agitated, this is unfair to President Buhari because to the best of my understanding it is an attempt to use the President’s name to give excuses for failure, if it happens, which should not be the case.”

The former Director-General of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) urged Adamu to prioritise developing a good relationship with individual members of the NWC to accommodate individual perspectives in handling the task of rebuilding the party.

APC primary turns bloody in Benue as angry members beat up state party chairman

The primary elections conducted on Friday by the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, were characterized by controversies and violence in some wards.

DAILY POST gathered that the state Chairman of the APC, Austin Agada, narrowly escaped being lynched as aggrieved members of the party protesting over irregularities descended on him.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the incident happened in Otukpa, the headquarters of the Ogbadibo Local Government Area where the irate members of the APC vented their anger on Agada to send a message to the leadership of the party.

Agada is from Ogbadibo LGA where the angry APC members in a mob-style manhandled him for claiming that there was an election in any part of the Benue South Senatorial District of the state.

In a video, which has gone viral, fisticuffs ensued as the state APC Chairman tried to convince the members that the primaries took place.

The APC members were heard shouting at Agada to produce evidence of result sheets and election materials to show where the primaries took place. While attempting to explain, the angry members pounced on him as gunshots could be heard while people scampered for safety.

An eye-witness at the bloody incident, who pleaded anonymity, narrated that it took the swift intervention of security agents who whisked Agada away from being lynched as he was heard shouting for help.

2023: Nigerians are eagerly waiting for the PDP to return to power - Party Chieftain, Dr Helen Adebakin

Hon. (Dr.) Hon Helen Taiwo Adebakin  politician, philanthropist and woman -activist participated in the just concluded primary elections of the People’s Democratic Party.  Taiwo-Adebakin who is also an educationist spoke with HighNotch media on the  outcome of the recently held presidential primary elections of her party.

Excerpts:

You were an active participant in the just concluded primary elections of your party,  what is your opinion about the  exercise?

We thanked God Almighty for the hitch-free  exercise. PDP as the main opposition party in Nigeria planned well for the primaries and no doubt,  the outcome was acceptable to all. But let me state clearly that all the contestants won, even though we now have somebody as our candidate, they are all respectable people and committed party men.  The PDP has demonstrated  capacity to conduct free, fair, credible and acceptable election with the way it handled the last National Convention  and the Presidential Primaries.

What are the chances of your party  in the 2023 general elections with the innovations brought in by the 2022 recently signed electoral act?
Let me state here that Nigerians are eagerly waiting for the PDP to return to power,  so that it could end this calamity brought upon  the country by the  ruling All Progressives Congress   (APC). The 2023 Presidential election is going to be scientific in nature. The contesting political parties  shall be speaking to facts and not rhetoric.

What was the state of the Nigeria’s economy  under PDP in 2015 and what is the situation now under the APC administration?. Nigerians would ask questions and I am sure they know the answers to these questions . Their responses shall simply be to vote for the PDP en - masse and return the PDP as a party to Aso Rock.

What would you consider to be the challenges of women  in politics in Nigeria?

The major problem confronting women in politics is perception. When certain individuals just feel that women are weaker sex and cannot compete with men in leadership positions.  Once that is removed, then women are equally capable to bring about the much needed change in this country. And more importantly, women too should stop being their own enemies. They should stand up to their responsibility and prove their worth.

Does Nigeria deserve a female President?

Of course yes, women are equally capable of piloting the affairs  of this country. We have proven our worth in many fronts. More importantly, women are more compassionate than men. We can’t allow people to suffer in the midst of abundance. I think the question should have been, why can’t we field a woman as presidential candidate this time around ?

Hellen Taiwo-Adebakin

What is your take on the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar  as your candidate  in the just concluded primary elections of your party?

Like I said, we give all glory to God and we thanked the PDP leaders and stakeholders for organising one of the freest and fairest primaries in recent times.  Right from the onset, we all know that one person would emerge at the end of the day and our amiable former Vice President and Waziri Adamawa, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar  has been elected as the PDP Presidential candidate. You know he was our Flag bearer in the 2019 General elections and you know the number of states he won for the PDP.  This time, Nigerians would do the campaign for Atiku and not PDP alone.

The poverty level in the country is high, what would your party do differently to change the narrative?

Basically, what PDP will do differently is to reintroduce pro-people policies and programs  by creating enabling environment for Nigerians to enable  our local industries thrive. This alone will tackle the menace of unemployment and end the raging insecurity in the land.  Once the larger percentage of our youths are engaged, the problem confronting this country is solved.

How can we tackle the menace of money politics in a poor country like Nigeria?

We cannot tackle this unless we have good governance and we cannot have good governance until Nigerians  return PDP to power. The ruling APC has been pursuing anti-people's policies and the results is the endemic poverty we see all over the place today in Nigeria .When a politician deliberately  impoverished  the masses, they become vulnerable to  all sorts of abuses .

What can Nigerians do to support women in politics?

Nigerians must take ownership of the advocacy on gender mainstreaming and inclusive governance. Let us emulate other African nations like South Africa and Rwanda.

How do you strike a balance between politics and family?

Well, nobody can claim to be a good politician without first being a good family man. Your success at the home front will greatly determine your success in politics..Family is about taking up responsibility, so also in politics.
